The chain of custody process for hard evidence is straightforward. But with the proliferation of mobile phones and smart devices, public safety agencies are quickly becoming inundated with digital media, including photos, videos, audio recordings, and text messages. The soft nature of these evidence types makes them vulnerable to tampering, manipulation, and destruction. To protect and safeguard digital evidence, new methodologies and technologies need to be applied to the chain of custody and evidence management process.
