Network Engineering

Efficiently, safely, and effectively manage physical networks.

Case Study
Sibelga Uses Utility GIS for Asset Management and Operations
Needing to update an obsolete geographical information system without vendor support, Sibelga implemented a utility GIS solution to reduce technology expenditures, streamline data management, integrate dispatch tools, and improve asset management.

Our network engineering solutions underpin efficient, safe, and effective management of the physical network. They cover asset and works management (including distribution network planning and analysis) and maintenance and operations functions, such as field inspection and vegetation management. Our solutions enable an operator to maintain a definitive source of reliable, location-based information about the facility network that can be shared with other users and other systems across the business enterprise from engineering to operations.

Benefits

Improve Efficiency

Integrate with other systems to streamline and automate work processes, including network planning design, construction, and inspections.

Make Informed Decisions

Maintain a definitive source of reliable, location-based information about the facility network that is accessible throughout the business and beyond.

Reduce Costs

Eliminate redundant design and documentation processes to save time, enhance data quality, and reduce costs.

Network Design & Documentation

By combining CAD capabilities with GIS, we remove the need for separate systems and workflows. This allows data to be produced more efficiently and removes latency from network records.

G/Technology’s smart editing tools use rules to drive semi-automated placement and run integral data validation, improving both the speed and quality of data capture. The assisted placement speeds the capture of complex graphical features while ensuring the correct symbology is applied, producing data that is visually consistent. At the same time, rules-based validation enforces corporate design standards and engineering/configuration rules while also confirming that geospatial elements are topologically clean. This combination boosts efficiency, provides higher-quality data, and expedites posting to the master data by reducing the need for post-capture data validation and clean-up.

Design & Construction

Our solutions support rich version management, analysis, and reporting capabilities required to model and manage engineering life cycles, including coordination with other business platforms such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), work and asset management system (WAMS), and field operations.

The ability to maintain alternate versions, combined with design validation and estimation, enables comparative assessments of designs, both technically and financially. With G/Technology, we can support these roles standalone or via interaction with the other business systems involved in managing change to the network, notably WAMS/ERP for job planning, materials, and costs and field mobility solutions for executing work.

Direct coordination of process and sharing of information between systems also enables the business to remove disconnected, duplicated, and contradictory processes, which delivers significant benefits. Operators can enhance safety, save money, and expedite work while improving the accuracy and currency of their records.

Network Planning & Analysis

G/Technology supports integration with leading distribution network analysis tools (such as ETAP and Siemens), which enables their operation directly within the user interface. The combination enables users to initiate calculations and visualize analysis results directly within the map. In this way, they can evaluate a new design’s impact on the distribution system.

The integration helps validate data in the model to ensure the correct functioning needed to support modeling. It enables the network model to address all the topological and electrical data needed to support sophisticated algorithms, such as the electric connectivity by phase, all the passive and active network components, device configurations, and customer linkages.

Network Model Management

The combination of G/Technology’s intelligent rules-based design and integration with DNA/ADM tools provides the basis for a consistent source of data that is reliable and functionally rich enough to pass to operational systems, such as ADMS and OMS. In some environments, the network model in G/Technology may need to be supplemented with information managed by external applications, which requires additional processing to aggregate and resolve the different data sources. For this purpose, we provide a Network Model Management solution that delivers a framework and consistent process to manage data integration. It is able to aggregate electric network data from multiple sources to form a consistent and comprehensive dataset, undertake QA, and publish the resolved data to formats compatible with an organization’s OMS, DMS, or other distribution planning tools. The solution is capable of working with G/Technology and GIS from other vendors.

Smart Grid Fiber

Many electric utilities are investing in their own networks to provide the communications needed for next-generation control and services. Some utilities are also using the network to launch broadband services to offset the cost of laying fiber to the home and diversifying their business with a multi-play offer.

Our leading fiber optic infrastructure management solution, Fiber Optic Works, runs on G/Technology, the same platform that supports our electric infrastructure management solution. This makes it easy to implement and manage.
