Intergraph G/Technology Fiber Optic Works

Enhance the complete life cycle of civil infrastructure and fiber network management.

Vibrant closeup of fiber optics

Intergraph G/Technology Fiber Optic Works is an advanced telecommunications GIS that provides location-based information and capabilities that enhance the complete life cycle of civil infrastructure and fiber network management – from design and construction through maintenance and operations. It supports geospatial infrastructure management needs throughout the enterprise, from back office to the field.

Fiber Optic Works maintains a definitive source of reliable, location-based information describing the facility network and its connectivity that can be shared with users and systems across the business.

Its feature-rich interface helps plan, connect, and deploy fiber networks, supporting full tracing capabilities, fault analysis, and path redundancy. It is able to assess, manage, and track the status of projects, equipment, and connections and coordinate with other systems to model the full engineering life cycle.

The rich telecoms model is ready to use out-of-the-box,maintaining extensive attribution about each fiber device and conductor to track connectivity and supports OSS/NRM integration.

Advanced Editing

Intergraph G/Technology delivers CAD capabilities within the GIS environment. Replacing separate tools, it improves design and documentation efficiency while removing latency and errors from network records. The smart editing tools use rules to drive semi-automated placement with integral data validation, further enhancing the speed and quality of data capture. They expedite the capture of complex graphical features and ensure symbology conforms to corporate standards. At the same time, rules-based validation enforces corporate design practice and engineering standards, while also checking the geospatial elements are valid and topologically clean.

The combined effect boosts efficiency, provides higher-quality data, and expedites posting to the master data by reducing the need for post-capture data validation and clean-up.

Rich Telecoms Model

Fiber Optic Works provides a rich and highly functional connect telecoms model that can be used out of the box or be configured to operator-specific requirements. It accommodates the connectivity of the complete network from any terminating device to the inside plant (ISP) termination. It addresses the inventory and connectivity of fiber, copper, equipment components, and the civils network – all within a single database. The model also supports coordination and integration with OSS/NRM platforms for faster operation and enhanced capabilities.

Engineering Life Cycles

As a module of Intergraph G/Technology, Fiber Optic Works provides the rich version management, analysis, tracking, and reporting capabilities needed to model and manage engineering life cycles, including coordination with other business platforms, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), work and asset management system (WAMS), and field operations.

The ability to maintain alternate versions, combined with design validation and estimation, enables comparative assessments of designs, both technically and financially. This can be achieved standalone or, as is more common in large networks, via interaction with other business systems involved in managing change to the network.

OSS/NRM Integration

Our customers operate Fiber Optic Works alongside a range of OSS/NRM platforms, including Amdocs OSS (previously Cramer Dimension), Visionael OSS (PR), and Ericsson Granite Inventory (formerly Telcordia Granite Inventory). Integrating and coordinating our advanced telecoms GIS with an OSS/NRM system provides significant benefits through process efficiencies, enhanced data quality and currency, extended functional capability, and faster operation. For example, the interface with Visionael NRM enables interaction with ISP equipment and circuit design with OSP features maintained by Fiber Optic Works. It also allows users to synchronize planned work in both systems and allows bi-directional queries from one system to the other and allows users to terminate fiber strands from OSP features to ports. Being able to search across both systems enables users to initiate fiber traces from devices maintained within Visionael, apply a comprehensive set of fiber reporting capabilities (path, usage, OTDR), and extract circuit information from the NRM.

Enterprise Scalability

Intergraph G/Technology has been proven in production environments – from tens to thousands of connected users in businesses ranging from local to multinational operation. In addition to its scalable architecture, G/Technology also helps establish consistency and teamwork, for example, by applying corporate design practices and standards through work processes and business rules. It also enables a business to operate as a single virtual environment across multiple sites to spread work across teams to balance loads and optimize utilization. This flexibility also enables the business to scale-up for large projects, either by focusing multiple teams on a project or providing secure access to service delivery partners and contractors – again while ensuring adherence to corporate standards and practices.
